Initial meeting in the town of Monreale, known for its marvelous Benedictine monastery, the biggest religious building of its age. It was built as a sign of triumph over the Islamic religion. The interior of the Cathedral is entirely covered in golden mosaics.
After this visit, we will reach Palermo, the capital city of Sicily. Even Goethe was stunned by the beauty of this colorful seaside metropolis, located in the “Golden Basin”, the plain that surrounds the city ranging from the mountains to the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is called “golden” because of the citrus plantations that surround Palermo: when the fruits ripen, the territory takes on a golden color and a soothing aroma of orange blossoms wafts in the air.
Magnificent buildings and towering monuments tell the history and the culture of the Arabs, the Normans and the Spaniards. The majestic Cathedral will leave you speechless, as well as the Palace of the Normans with its beautiful Palatin Chapel.
A visit to Palazzo Drago will narrate us the history of the city and the opulent lifestyle of the noblemen that lived here in the past centuries. Walking through the main streets of the huge historical center, we will eventually reach the ancient Quattro Canti crossroad, and the nearby Piazza Pretoria, known for its beautiful fountain and for the secret history that it conceals.
We will then enter the colorful and noisy streets of the Ballarò market, that will take us to the Arab Tower. After an exclusive visit, we will enjoy a traditional Sicilian lunch inside the tower, complete with wine and Marsala, a very sweet fortified wine suitable for the end of every good meal.
